25 Signs You Go to BYU-Idaho

1. You've complained at least 10x about the track you were put on.

2. You've never had to experience the freshman dorm life.

3.  It's totally normal to start class with a prayer...in a foreign language.

4.  If you're a girl with a mission call, your dating life is practically nonexistent.

5.  You have mastered the art of the "ring check"

6.  You have to drive 40 minutes to get to a mall, Target, Noodles & Co, Buffalo Wild Wings, Olive Garden...and pretty much any form of civilization.

7.  Tuesdays are the best days because everyone dresses up and looks fiiiiine.

8.  You'll never have frat brothers or sorority sisters, but you have FHE brothers and sisters so that's pretty much the same thing, right?

9.  Your biggest complaint about your school is that there aren't real sports.

10.  You feel like a rebel when you roll up your jeans to show your ankles.

11.  "Welcome to another great day at BYU-Idaho"

12.  You read #11 in President Clark's voice.

13.  The equivalent of a trip to the beach is driving down to the Sandbar.

14.  11:58pm is practically rush hour.

15.  Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters should be renamed Winter 1, Winter 2, and Summer semesters.

16.  If you have Fall/Spring track, you have a memorized speech of why you're home for 4 months in the middle of the year.

17.  Walking to the Ricks in the winter is practically a death sentence.

18.  Not only is it not frowned upon to be 21 and married and pregnant, but it's encouraged.

19.  You've been fined more for jaywalking or texting in a crosswalk than for parking illegally.

20.  You call your professors "Brother _______" and "Sister _______"

21.  You know that Rexburg has the coolest clouds ever. Period.

22.  You know what CTR, LDS, SLC, FHE, NCMO, and DTR all stand for.

23.  You get a grade for reading your scriptures.

24.  You probably go to BYU-Idaho because you didn't get into BYU-Provo, but now you realize that BYU-Idaho is highly underrated.

25.  You freaking love Rexburg, but as soon as you graduate, you're out of here.

    1. Normally I do just blog posts every week about what I've been doing in college and stuff to keep my family updated so the title is more applicable. I just felt like doing this post for fun. Sorry.

  4. What is BYU-Provo? No such place. There is BYU and BYU-Idaho. BYU is in the city of Provo.

    1. BYU-Provo is the BYU where people go to get their GPA's crushed for no reason. It's the BYU where everyone is SUPER competitive and they all think they're God's gift to the earth. It's the BYU that no-one outside of Utah differentiates from BYU-Idaho. It's the BYU that you attend to do A TON of extra work and end up with the same degree as someone who went to BYU-Idaho has. BYU-Idaho is the BYU where you can actually have fun, interact with your teachers, crush your undergrad and still have the exact same degree as someone who graduated from BYU-Provo.

    2. Wow. I went to both. BYU folks were very competitive, yep. For good reason--most of them are hoping to get into grad school. Few (if any) thought about BYU-Idaho, and those who did, did do it in a condescending way. So that was dumb. BYU-Idaho I loved, but I got annoyed at the self-defensive "Well...we're the more spiritual school!!" Don't forget they're both church schools. I loved a lot about both...main pro of Provo was the sports, Idaho was it just being easier academically. So...stop turning it into a battle, tithing dollars go toward both schools.

    3. As an outsider to both BYU schools and Utah, BYU-I is set apart as the school with the 98% acceptance rate and the value of the degree is less because employers do their research. You get what you pay for.

    4. I'm a Computer Science student at BYUI and right now the department of Computer Science and Engineering places 100% of its graduates in jobs making 60k+ a year, so I'm very happy with what I'm paying for. Don't be so quick to judge the value of a degree at BYUI.

    5. Steve Jobs didnt even graduate from college, and died a billionaire...go where you want, learn what you want, do what you want, the college does not determine your success or the job that you will have, unless you are someone who soley depends on your GPA to get somewhere in life. Innovation my friends..innovation.

    6. I agree with ^ that guy. College is great because it helps you set goals and keep a pace with your learning. Homework and accountability make you a proactive learner (even if you aren't super interested in the subject) but it doesn't really matter what your grades are as long as you can work hard, understand things, and improve the workplace!

Seriously, anyone can make money if they work hard enough and make wise choices with their goals in mind. If you start working at a fast food place, then work with the intent to become a manager and continue to work your way into corporate, or you'll be stuck working minimum wage forever.

  9. To the person saying the degrees are less...most people recognize the name and what it stands for. Depending on the degree, employers really don't know the difference and the one's that are picky will be the only ones that know. I lived back east and whenever I was at career fairs and such I would ask if being an Eagle Scout made a difference and they all said no and many said, "No, I don't even know why it would." So there's another "fib" that people try and tell you--"you'll get hired because you're an Eagle Scout." Just like how some employers know the difference and will hire based off that, most employers outside of Utah and Idaho don't care if you were an Eagle Scout or not.

    1. Hey. Cool article! Just wanted to add my 2 cents to the responses. 1) BYU-Hawaii is cool too haha. 2) I also grew up back east and lived in the west as well. Here's my experience...few non-lds people know about the other BYU campuses...haha living in Idaho when we said BYU everyone assumed BYU-I, living in Hawaii when we say BYU everyone assumes BYU-H. Haha and I have lots of friends who have attended the BYU-Jerusalem campus as well. In the end there is no point in arguing. They are distinct campuses, but all have the same mission. We learn, we serve. And whats important about the degree is what you make of it. As for the comment on eagle scouts. Some employers DO CARE!! Especially if they understand and recognize the value and work involved. Others still can be impressed in the way that you share it. The same goes for your missions. Both can be shared in your resume/cover letter/interview in a way that highlights your strength, hard work, and commitment. Good luck and thanks again for the article!!

    2. Thank you! I'm not sure why this turned into a competition between BYU and BYU-Idaho. That wasn't the point at all. All 3 church schools are different and have their own pros and cons, so comparing them and trying to say one is better than another. They are all run by the church and are all inspired.

  10. In response to the acceptance rate about BYU-I, yes it is 98% percent or so but that is because they are trying to build a bigger student body for the time being. Once the student population is about 30,000, they are going to be more selective in their acceptance of new students, thus making the rating of the school go up. I would imagine most schools do a similar thing when they are newish. (Remember, BYU-I hasn't been a 4 year university for that long).

Also, I worked on helping create programs that would allow teachers to do outside research. You would be surprised to know that the school and their departments are working in more time for the professors to do outside research and work, just like a more prestigious university would.

  13. I'm a guy, and I don't really feel like there is any point in dating a girl who has a mission call unless I'm already in a relationship with her and have decided to wait for her. You're totally right on point 4.
